The ‘One Million Steps to Health and Wellbeing’ is a program for women diagnosed with cancer who realize that physical activity is important step in regaining their health and want to become more physically active in their daily lives. It is a program designed to help cancer survivors, whether they are currently in treatment or after their cancer treatment has ‘ended’. This program is FREE for all women cancer survivors.

What exactly is the Million Steps to Health and Wellbeing Program?
The million steps program is both an independent (done on your own) and bi-monthly group walking program whereby the number of steps taken in a single day are recorded and tracked for a period of time. The goal of the program is to reach 1,000,000 steps, increase fitness, lose weight, and have a good time with others doing it. Incentives are awarded during the progress towards 1,000,000 steps.

How are my steps recorded?
Every participant will be given a pedometer (step measuring device worn on the waistband of your clothing). Though the group meets only twice per month, participants will be encouraged to monitor and record their steps everyday. The CSC staff will provide you a very simple log where you will record the number of steps taken for the day and a place to record your body weight. The data sheets can be sent to the CSC office, emailed, or faxed where the staff will store the files. The data sheet is constructed such that you will be able to see a running total of steps to-date and be able to view day to day variations in steps, track changes in your body weight and body mass index (BMI).

Can I record other forms of exercise to “count” towards the million steps?
Yes. For other types of activity that cannot be recorded with the pedometer (e.g., swimming), simply tell us how long you did the exercise and provide a rating of how hard the activity was on a 1-10 scale (see appendix). The CSC staff will convert any modality of exercise into a specific number of steps that count toward the ultimate goal of one million steps.

Incentives to participate
We have a master tracking chart at the office and are able to chart your progress toward the end goal. Incentives will be provided at 100,000 steps (logo socks), 400,000 steps (logo hat) and 700,000 steps (logo T-shirt) and at 1,000,000 (weekend retreat).

Once the participant hits one million steps they will be inducted to our “Millionaires Club.” A donated bouquet of flowers will be sent to their home congratulating them on becoming part of the club.

What do I need to do to participate?

  1. The desire to participate
  2. A good pair of walking shoes
  3. A pedometer, water bottle and holder (which we will provide at no charge)
  4. A completed release from your primary care physician to participate (we will send this to your doctor).
  5. To complete a quality of life survey before you start the program and when you finish or stop the program (this takes about 10 minutes to complete).

That’s it. There are no hidden costs and outside of the purchase of a decent pair of walking/hiking shoes nothing to buy or join.

Do I need to be a client at the Cancer Survivor Center to participate?
No, just a cancer survivor who wants to participate.

I have a friend/spouse/significant other who wants to participate as well, can they?
Yes but there is a fee for their participation of $40/month. This fee is used to cover the costs of the pedometers and water bottles and holders, and a staff member to record the steps at the office. Look at their donation to the CSC as if it is sponsorship of you….you are now a professional athlete with a sponsor!!!!
