Dear
Friends,
Spring
is finally here! We hope you are enjoying some
warmer, sunnier days in the mountains!
One
of the goals of the Cancer Survivor Center is to provide our
clients, families, and friends with numerous cancer resources.
Currently, we have hundreds of informational
pamphlets, fact sheets, and magazines packed with information
from financial resources, to cancer staging, to how to speak
to family members about a diagnosis. Many of
these resources are also available in Spanish. In
addition, we recently received copies of the Patient Resource,
a guide to thousands of Colorado resources for survivors.
Should
you, or anyone you know, be interested in receiving resources,
please stop by our office located on the bottom floor of the
Aspen Club, or give us a call at 970-920-5836.
We will be happy to assist you any way we can.
A
few weeks ago, we introduced you to GoodSearch, a search engine
powered by Yahoo that donates money to your favorite charity
every time you complete a search!
This week, we would like to let you know more about
GoodShop! Also powered
by Yahoo, your selected charity receives a donation (up to
37.5% of the total) for each purchase you make.
GoodShop contains thousands of retailers to choose
from. Whether you are purchasing airline tickets from
United or Frontier, are bidding on a new item on eBay, or
you are buying new road biking gear from Nashbar or Amazon,
you can find it all on GoodShop!
To start shopping, simply go to Goodshop.com,
select the Cancer
Survivor Center
as your charity of choice, and use the pull down menus to
shop at your favorite store. Please note, GoodShop will redirect you to the
retailer’s homepage.
Finally,
we would like to provide you with this week’s training tip.
Should you have any questions, comments, or concerns,
please do not hesitate to contact one of our Cancer Exercise
Specialists.
Training
Tip: “Fuel for Exercise”
Prior to your strength
workout or aerobic exercise, it is important that you fuel
your body effectively and be well hydrated. If it has
been more than 2 hours since your last meal and you are headed
to the gym or outdoors for a long walk, a simple easy good
source of carbohydrate and water is Gatorade. This will
provide the hydration and carbohydrate needed to sustain your
activity during the workout.
Why?
Gatorade has 130
calories in a 20 oz bottle (591 ml), no fat and no protein.
The sugars are (for better or worse) from sucrose and high-fructose
corn syrup, but are balanced well with sodium and potassium.
This allows for rapid and effective absorption into the body.
The increased glucose in the blood is needed to maintain work,
no matter what the intensity. When blood glucose levels fall
dramatically, you will stop or slow down in your workout.
Hydrate and top
off your carbohydrate levels before EVERY workout so your
exercise session will be a good one.
In health,

Colorectal
Cancer Testing on the Rise
Since
2002, there has been a significant increase in colorectal
cancer screening in the U.S. Although there is still much progress to be
made, the screenings are proof, that when caught early,
colorectal cancers are highly curable and even preventable.
Cancer
Facts and Figures 2008
Each
year, the American Cancer Society produces an annual statistics
report documenting the estimated number of new cancer cases
and the mortality rates for the upcoming year. In addition, they report findings of state-by-state
data on cancer cases.
