Dear Friends,

We have recently initiated a new program here at the Cancer Survivor Center and are inviting you to take part.

'One Million Steps to Health and Wellbeingİ' is a FREE program for women diagnosed with cancer who realize that physical activity is an important step in regaining their health and who want to become more physically active in their daily lives.  It is a program designed to help cancer survivors, whether they are currently in treatment or after their cancer treatment has 'ended'.

The Million Steps program is both an independent (done on your own) and bi-monthly group walking program whereby the number of steps taken in a single day are recorded and tracked for a period of time.  The goal of the program is to reach 1,000,000 steps, increase fitness, lose weight, and have a good time with others doing it.  Incentives are awarded during the progress towards 1,000,000 steps.

Every participant will be given a pedometer (step measuring device worn on the waistband of your clothing).  Though the group meets only twice per month, participants will be asked to monitor and record their steps everyday.  Our staff will provide you a very simple log where you will record the number of steps taken for the day.  The data sheets can be emailed or faxed to our office where the staff will review the data.  The data sheet is constructed such that you will be able to see a running total of steps to-date and be able to view day to day variations in steps, track changes in your body weight and body mass index (BMI).

If you or someone you know is interested in participating in the One Million Steps to Health and Wellbeing program, please contact the Cancer Survivor Center at 970-920-5836 or at info@aspencancer.org.

TRAINING TIP

Think you don't like exercise?   Start simply by walking.

Walking programs are the easiest way to start a fitness program.  They are cost and time effective and safe for virtually everyone.  During your treatments, walking will most likely be the primary way to engage in some type of physical activity.  Depending on a number of factors, you may be encouraged to participate in a walking program between 5-60 minutes on a regular basis (3-5 times per week) at low to moderate intensity

If you want to know how much walking you are doing on weekly basis, consider joining our Million Step to Health and Wellbeing program.  We will count the number of steps for you and provide a chart to show you how much activity you are getting on a weekly basis.  Why do this?  We have found that counting your steps provides a simple motivational tool to do more. Those who walk more tend to recover quicker and get back to life as they used to know it before cancer.

Consider counting your steps with us.

In health,

Riggs

FDA Approves New Test to Identify Herceptin Candidates
The FDA has recently approved another test to determine which breast cancer patients are candidates for Herceptin.  The test is called the SPOT-Light HER2 CISH kit and may also help labs run more efficiently.
