| Now
that spring is upon us in the Rocky Mountains, we begin our
second summer of providing exercise programs to cancer survivors.
If you know anyone needing assistance with their cancer diagnosis,
please feel free to contact us at the numbers below. You may
not be aware that we are now able to insurance bill for most
of our services and we will always offer our services on a
sliding fee scale so that no survivor is ever turned away.
Thanks to some generous donors and grant funding we are able
to provide scholarships for some of our clients. Our goal
is to provide our services to ANY survivor, regardless of
their resources. Please spread the word! Most of our client
base thus far has come to us by word of mouth.
We would like to offer kudos to the Shining
Stars Foundation for their 26th annual Aspen
Winter Games at Buttermilk last week. Dr. Larry McCleary and
Kathy Gingery and their outstanding staff brought 52 cancer
survivors (8-18 years) to Aspen for a week of recreation and
fun. This is an outstanding program put together by outstanding
people. Hats off to the Shining Star Foundation and their
wonderful staff!!!
Another great local event to keep on your calendars.... Roaring
Fork Relay For Life (RFL) is an annual event
that provides many opportunities for communities to learn
more about cancer. It brings cancer survivors together to
celebrate their survival, helps families and friends remember
those who have not survived, and raises money for cancer research,
prevention, early detection, education, and patient services.
This year's relay will be held starting on Friday August 10th
at 6:30pm through Saturday August 11th at 8:30 am. The 2007
Relay For Life Kick-Off Event will be held Monday, April 2nd
6:00-7:30pm at the Roaring Fork High School. Don't miss this
high-energy event to learn more about the Relay, register
your team, or sign up as a walker. Special savings for teams
- Registration fees at the Kick-Off will be $75! And, you
could win a pair of new running shoes from Independence Run
& Hike of Carbondale! So hurry and RSVP to Lauren 384-2490.
Here at the Cancer Survivor Center, one of our goals is to
provide exercise programs that help increase the quality of
life of survivors. We are currently reviewing our programs
and about to publish a paper of the effectiveness of our programming
for clients. We came across this review article from England
that you may find interesting. While the information presented
here is directed at breast cancer survivors, we have significant
evidence that aerobic exercise training will help increase
physical and mental wellbeing in all cancer survivors.
